Night time feeding problem, any ideas?

Anyone else with this issue? My son was 3 months on the 2nd. He has had NO problems with feedings since he left the hospital. Long story short--I tried breastfeeding, didn't work, now he's exclusively formula fed (soy). Anyway, as I said, no problems. Until now.

As of the last couple weeks my son has had some kind of problem at his bedtime feeding. (Not every time, just a few times.) He usually eats around 6 ounces. But after about half of that he starts crying and screaming for about an hour. I can't seem to do anything to make it better. It's like his stomach is really bothering him. But no gas comes out--either end. I just can't figure it out. It's only the night time feeding and it has only happened a few times. He really acts like it's extremely painful. Makes me cry when he hurts like that. Last night was bad!

Oh--also--he has started spitting up, maybe an hour or so after he has eaten and burped like normal. He used to never spit up AT ALL!

Any ideas?

Sage went through a stage like this for a month or two.  Only at night, usually after she ate she would FREAK out non stop for about an hour.  Everyone told me it was a phase and she would stop.  She did.  Not sure if this helps.  She seemed gassy but nothing came out.  Sometimes they just have a cranky time of day/night.

It sounds like (and I am not a doctor, but from experience) it could be GERD/Reflux. Both of my boys had it. They would cry after they ate and what they ate (or portions of it) would come back up. With my first son it started at about 6 weeks old and lasted until 3 1/2 months. My 2nd it started at birth and lasted until he was about 14 months. There is medicine, such as Reglan and Zantac that they can give. Also, sitting up 30 minutes after a feed (a booster seat, swing, etc, work great for that) can help. It could also be the nightly fussies. My 2nd had that too. Every night, at 7pm, he would scream for no reason. He stayed latched on until morning. IT was the only thing to soothe him. He just had the fussies every single night at 7 and it never ended. Nothing soothed him until I would lay in bed with him and let him nurse for hours. I finally went to a pacifier and it helped to give me some relief, but he still fought me and wanted the breast. Sometimes, there is nothing you can do when they get the fussies. Just let them cry it out, otherwise whatever you do end up doing might end up routine. Hope it gets better! Good luck!

Both of my girls did this...I tried gas drops, rocking, swings, everything.  My mother told me it was like when my sibling had colic.  There was nothing that worked every time.  It only lasted a few weeks to a month or so..but it killed me to watch it.   They did think my one had mild reflux...but nothing really every came of the events.  It was between 6-8 pm every night.  Ugh.  Hoping it passes soon.

Sounds like reflux...poor little guy. My son was having a similar problem with night feedings and I decided to set my alarm about an hour earlier than he usually woke up to feed him. It helped and I believe the reason is that having gone so long without eating at night, the gas/acid builds up in the tummy. Unfortunately for me, it meant having to wake up an extra time at night to feed him, but it really worked for baby. It only lasted a couple months for my son...I hope it gets better for you and yours!

Is there any other formula that is milder than soy?  It sounds like the formula is the problem.  Maybe throw away the batch you have (in case it's bad somehow - God forbid!), and call the pediatrician for another option recommendation.  It's so odd to me that it started all of a sudden after he fed normally and happily.  So sad for him and you. :(

We just went through the same thing with our daughter and she will be 8 weeks old on Thursday.  She was fine from birth til about 3-4 weeks ago and at her night time feedings she would start screaming, stiffing up, arching her back and she began to spit up alot.  The first night it happened I coughed it up as a bad night, fighting sleep or gassy and just couldnt get it out. After another night of it I took her to the dr and explained what was going on.  He said reflux, so she was given zantac twice a day.  Then a week later she went through it again and I took her back because I felt her formula wasnt gentle enough.  He changed her to Nutramigen 2 weeks ago and my baby is back to the happy sweet baby again.  So it was a combo of both acid reflux because the zantac helped alot, but the formula change sealed the deal.  It is horrible when they feel so bad and there is nothing you can do for it.  Best of luck to you and hope your sweet boy gets to feeling better really soon!
